The main focus of any emergency response must be the safety of the public and all personnel responding to the emergency.
The Natural Gas Emergency Tip Cards help first responder personnel determine the proper actions to take when responding to an emergency. They should be used in conjunction with the utility’s policies, procedures and training practices.
The five-card corresponds to five common natural gas emergency situations:
- Gas explosions
- Inside gas leak investigations
- Outside gas leak investigations
- Carbon monoxide investigations
- Gas system damage
The tip cards are available with a holder that can be attached to a vehicle's sun visor to assure the cards are readily accessible when responding to an emergency.

A Water Valve Inspection/Maintenance Program: An Overview
Water valves and hydrants are integral parts of water distribution systems. It's critical that they function when needed. AEGIS Loss Control created this document and checklist to help water utilities in their efforts to inspect and maintain these devices.
Transformer Contingency Planning Guide
The modern large power transformer is a complicated piece of industrial equipment. Failures of transformers often result in the shutdown of power production for extended periods of time. Transformer repair or replacement involves coordination of many disparate resources and long periods of time. This guide helps transformer owners and users to develop and implement contingency plans for each critical transformer.
Non-Revenue Water: An Overview
Non-revenue water (NRW) is the difference between the volume of metered water produced and the volume of metered water that is sold and is sometimes referred to as "unaccounted-for" or "lost water."
NRW is a significant concern to many water utilities and the water industry in general. Reducing NRW makes good business sense and it helps assure that future generations will have access to clean, potable water. AEGIS Loss Control has created a document and checklist to help member companies address this critical issue.
Electric, Gas and Water Self-Administered Risk Assessment (SARA) Guides
Gas, electric and water utilities differ in most respects yet they share many general liability risk exposures and loss control issues. The SARA Guides review topics that are based on analysis of the actual claims and occurrences reported to AEGIS. Code and other regulatory requirements and references, as applicable, are also included.
The electronic versions of the electric and gas guides include a new "page turning" feature for easy navigation.
Use of the SARA is subject to the terms and conditions contained in the License Agreement accompanying each document. By use of the documents, you are agreeing to the terms of the License Agreement.
Water Utility Operations Security Checklist
The checklist helps water utilities review their security practices, procedures and policies to prevent intentional physical damage to plants, contamination of water, and disruption of operations.
Self-Assessment of Natural Gas and Hazardous Liquid Pipeline Operator Public Awareness Programs
This is a DRAFT of a self-assessment designed to determine whether operators comply with PSIA and if existing programs meet new standards.
Review of Major Liability Losses (RMLL)
This annual publication provides valuable information regarding the nature and significance of large losses associated with electric and gas utility operations. Intended to be used in conjunction with a utility's risk management programs, the RMLL claim summaries highlight information or events contributing to the incident described. A "Lessons To Be Learned" section included with each claim description contains suggestions to prevent a recurrence.
Loss data charts representing the distribution of claims by various electric and gas utility facilities are available to further examine the type of loss, contributing factors, or circumstances involved. The graphs are numbered for easy reference and can be followed using the navigation diagram found on each chart.
Workers' Compensation claims with large incurred losses are also included. Located in the Loss Control section of the website, the RMLLs Claim Summaries are available, by year, for the years 1983 through the current year. Additional claim summaries are added throughout the year.
Electric Utility Inspection Forms
The AEGIS Loss Control Division has developed electric transmission, distribution and substation inspection forms that may be used to help evaluate a utility's existing inspection forms or to develop new ones. These forms are in spreadsheet format, so users can edit the format and content to fit their needs.
- Distribution Line Inspection Form
- Padmounted Equipment Internal Inspection Form
- Padmounted Equipment External Inspection Form
- Substation Public Safety and Security Inspection Form
- Substation Inspection Form (Alternative Format)

Power Plant Sprinkler Systems - A Success Story
On the morning of December 16, 2002, Unit X at XXXXX Steam Plant was operating normally until a fire broke out in the immediate area of the turbine oil bowser and reservoir.
